We replayed The Path of the Young Heroes on a rainy Saturday with my son making completely different choices than the first time. He remembered what hadn't worked and tried something new, watching a 9-year-old think strategically like that, you realise the game is teaching him more than just story.

Every choice my kids made felt like it actually changed things. My daughter spent ten minutes debating whether to help a goblin or not, she was talking it through like it was a real moral dilemma. At the end she said 'can we replay it and see what happens if I choose differently?' That was the moment I knew we'd be doing this every weekend.

Six years old and I'd assumed I'd be carrying most of the session. Wrong. By session three, the rules were being corrected for me. Six years old.

Enjoyable session. The handouts are a nice touch, makes it feel more like an actual adventure. One small typo on a character card but nothing serious.

Best day of his life, he said. He's 7. He still says it after every single session. Six sessions in. I've started writing down the exact words because I want to keep them.

After we finished, my son sat quietly for a moment and then asked 'Is Midrolia okay though? Like, even after the story ends?' He was genuinely worried about a fictional dragon. He's 8. That's what good storytelling does, it makes you forget it isn't real.

I've played adult D&D for years and was a bit sceptical. Thirty minutes in I'd completely forgotten about the simplified mechanics because the story was actually good. My kids now ask every single Friday if it's game night yet. We've made it a ritual.
